How Do I Join YWAM?
How Do I Join YWAM?
Have you ever been interested in going into missions and wondered, “How do I join YWAM?” Well… it’s easy! Here at Pacific Reach, we have three options for you if you are interested in joining YWAM for either short-term or long-term missions:
- Short-term mission opportunities
- Medical mission trips
- Long-term mission opportunities
Short Term Missions
A good way to get your foot in the door in YWAM is to become a Mission Builder. Mission Builders may not have done a YWAM DTS (Discipleship Training School) but are interested in serving and getting to know more about YWAM. You would likely be able to take a short amount of time (less than 3 months) to sow into our ministry. Mission Builders can serve in any of our other departments on the base that are not directly related to DTS for a few weeks to a few months. Don’t worry…if you decide you want to do a DTS, you can apply for a DTS at any time!
Contact us if you’re interested in Mission Building. We’ll let you know what opportunities are available to you, and we’ll find a good fit for you!
Medical Missions
If you are interested in going on a short-term medical missions trip, one of our sister ministries is the Family Care Centre (FCC) in Vanuatu. This incredible ministry was born out of Pacific Reach’s vision to help disciple a nation and provides free quality medical and dental healthcare to Ni-vans (Vanuatu natives). The FCC also offers Discipleship Training Schools and other healthcare related training programs to equip the individual’s spiritual life and relationship with Jesus alongside the healthcare ministry.
Their incredible state of the art facility has brought love and hope to a nation in dire need, and this is an awesome opportunity to be Jesus’ hands and feet in the islands! If you have a medical qualification in nursing or dentistry or are looking to enter that field, a medical missions trip to Vanuatu is a great option for you! For more information, get in touch with the FCC staff on their contact page.
Long Term Missions
If you would like to join YWAM for long-term missions, the first thing to do is a Discipleship Training School (DTS). Pacific Reach offers DTSs three times a year: January, July, and October. DTS is where you take 3 months to intentionally delve deeper into your relationship with the Lord and then go out into the community around New Zealand and abroad, for a 2-month outreach to bring the Gospel and love of God to the nations*. Check out what is DTS for more information.
Once you have completed your DTS you can then join any of our secondary schools and/or apply to become a Volunteer Staff. As you can imagine, there are many needs a base has to run effectively and smoothly. At Pacific Reach, we have different departments: Training, Operations, Hospitality, Medical (through the FCC in Vanuatu), and Administration. When you become staff you will join one or more of these circles in an area where you are interested or where there is the biggest need.
Conclusion
At Pacific Reach, we are a close-knit community that stands by the YWAM values and mission statement to know God and to make Him known. We have a passion for transformational discipleship, cultivating change in young peoples’ lives.
We value family and keeping Jesus at the centre of everything whether we are a DTS student, staffing a school, or serving in many of the other departments around the base. You should come and join this fun-loving community that brings transformation to each other, to the community, and to countries around the world.

*During the pandemic, outreaches have been within New Zealand and we have seen God touch many people’s lives within our own nation.
“Medical Compassion DTS was a truly an incredible experience. Working in health centres, hospitals and pop-up clinics grew my interest in medicine and allowed me to practically show the love of God. For me, the most transformational aspect of my Med-Com DTS was the focus on compassion and its importance in achieving true holistic healing. This is an experience like no other!”
Matthew Bassett, 18, Orewa, NZ
“The Justice Movement stream really opened my eyes to what justice looks like through the eyes of God. Justice is more than making wrong right, it’s walking in mercy and humility. Justice is bringing light and life to orphans, widows, immigrants, and hope to anyone who is oppressed.”
Naomi Wilson, 18, AB, Canada
“God showed me that true worship always comes out of a place of intimacy and revelation of what Jesus has done for me. I realized that this is were I want to be – sitting at His feet and pouring out my love and affection before Him, because He’s so worthy.”
Julianna Suter, 20, Switzerland
“Doing SPHC was an amazing experience. Not only was I given the opportunity to continue to grow spiritually, but I learned things that can be used in a very practical and much needed way. SPHC gave me the opportunity to show the Father’s heart to people in a very unique way and love on the person in front of me while helping them in such a simple way.”
Karunia Been, 20, Portugal
DBS has been a fulfilled prayer for me. When I was home, I asked the Lord to bring me deeper into his word, and He put that desire on my heart. I knew I would come back to staff, and I thought I would dive into it on my own. I found myself not having the right tools needed to effectively study God’s word. Once DBS became an option, I went for it wholeheartedly. I have been enjoying my time, going deeper than I imagined. God has shown me new things, removed false perspectives of his word and brought me into a deeper understanding of who he is. I have been challenged in many ways during this course, helping me find my place in God’s kingdom. I’ve been able to build a strong foundation with the Word of God. Over all, the Lord created a new heart within me that desires to love, praise, share joy, and bring others into the family of God. I love this school for all that is provided from strong friendships to heart moving moments in small groups and the teachings. My life will never be the same after this school!
Alex Denney, 20, Washington
“Being apart of Wild Heart has really helped me find out what it means to be wild for God. It has helped me break out of shells I didn’t even I know had. The stream transformed my way of thinking when it comes to being a disciple of Christ, teaching me to take action in faith. It has given me many things I will be able to take home and apply in my daily life, crazy awesome!”
Deylan Santy, 19, Idaho, USA
“The Justice Movement Stream taught me to truly fall in love with and respect other cultures and people groups, and how to see them as God sees them.”
Kasandra Adler, 19, Missouri, USA
“Wild at Heart? Yes, of course! But whatever adventure I went for, I wanted to be the one in control. During my DTS, God changed my heart to go wild with Him. I learned to trust in God and that I don’t have to be in charge, as long as I know the One who is!”
Silas Bauer, 21, Germany
“Since being here at Pacific Reach, my hunger for God has continued to grow more and more. In the Kingdom Come stream, our heart is to see the world changed by the message of His love and the demonstration of His power. It’s such a privilege to be apart of a group of people so on fire for Jesus!”
Joseph Pope, 25, Virginia, USA
“For the past two years God has called me to go deeper in the word and not just let it be a surface level experience with Him. However I didn’t really have the tools, knowledge or understanding for how to go about this. God spoke to me months before I knew I would be able to do the DBS, during lockdown, that those who get into the word would see the face of Jesus. I am realizing that as I get into the word for hours a day with really helpful teachings to go alongside the readings, that is exactly what is happening. I am gaining such a deeper understanding of who God is and who I am, in relation to Him. There have been weeks where doing the homework assignments just completely wrecked me by seeing the love of God and in the moments of reflecting how God has moved so radically in my life. Even when I wasn’t walking closely with Him, He has always been drawing me back into a close relationship with Him by His love and mercy and grace.”
Anika Hochstedler, 26, New York
