Bible Devotional: Genesis and the Image of God
Bible Devotional: Genesis and the Image of God
Here at Pacific Reach, we are passionate about Discipleship and about the Bible. Bible devotionals are amazing and different from Bible study, even if only in emphasis. In this blog, we will look at an example of reading the Bible devotionally, and we’ll also look at how Bible study can help us. This Bible devotional is all about the image of God and focuses on the first chapter of Genesis verses twenty-six through thirty.
Made in the Image of God
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.”
Reading the Bible Devotional
Now read the text again, maybe even a couple of times. Ask yourself “What does this mean? What does this say about who God is? Who am I according to this passage?”
After this, have a conversation with God about your thoughts (a.k.a. prayer).
Congratulations! You have now done a Bible devotional, but let us go a little deeper.
Going Deeper into the Image of God
The word in, in English, can denote different things as can the Hebrew word for in which is the letter beth. (For a dictionary definition check here.)
The apple is in the bag. (Describes location.)
I wrote the note in pen. (Describes what tool was used.)
The window broke in pieces. (Describes result)
I am in education. (Describes function.)
- A being made in the image of God is an example of the functional usage of the word.
A teacher is in education, regardless of whether they are a good or a bad teacher. The same can be said about humans being made in the image of God. Humans can image God either poorly or well but they are not more or less an image of God.
Now read the text again and see if anything new comes to mind. With this new meaning of being made in the image of God, what does this say about who God is? How does this affect how you live your life?
Here are some verses you might want to look at as well:
2 Corinthians 4:4, John 14:9b-10, Colossians 3:10, Romans 8:29, and 2 Corinthians 3:18.
Take some time to pray and meditate on the passage of scripture, but also on what the image of God means as a function.
Here at Pacific Reach, we have a training program where the Bible is read and studied with the primary goal of discipleship. During this program called the Discipleship Bible School (DBS), we look at the whole Bible. If you have questions or want to learn more about the DBS, there is more information on our DBS page.
“Prayer and Passion completely changed my outlook on the true power that prayer has. It had always been something that I knew worked and I did, but it was boring. Being a part of this stream gave me new understanding of how prayer is worship and fuels the power of heaven connecting with earth. It will move you to a place of praying out of your relationship with the Lord rather than giving him a list of things you want. You will gain a newfound intimacy with God as your prayer life is propelled.”

“SPHC is such an incredible gateway to seeing the world with God’s eyes. To see how His heart breaks at the brokenness of this world, and to see how the lack of education about little things such as germs and washing hands causes so much illness and suffering in the world, to then be equipped and sent to BRING THAT CHANGE! It is such a life changing/ perspective shifting program that has really changed my life!”
Antonio Wolfe, 20, Alberta, Canada
“The Medical Compassion DTS gave me a glimpse into the medical side or missions. The compassion part was what caught me. I saw that when we see with Jesus’ eyes of genuine compassion, we must get our hands dirty.”
Brady Picking, 21, Pennsylvania, USA
“The Justice Movement stream really opened my eyes to what justice looks like through the eyes of God. Justice is more than making wrong right, it’s walking in mercy and humility. Justice is bringing light and life to orphans, widows, immigrants, and hope to anyone who is oppressed.”
Naomi Wilson, 18, AB, Canada
“We had been married for 5 years when we came to Pacific Reach. As a married couple, we learned a lot about each other and ourselves and gained a lot for our marriage. What we enjoyed most during the GO PAC stream times was the mix between the depth we dove into God’s Word, getting to know His plan for us better, and the times thinking and learning about the interesting Pacific cultures. We think it is so important to get to know new cultures. At the base, there are many different cultures, but you really want to get to know the one culture where you live and where you’re going on outreach. We experienced that when spiritual basics are understood with the heart and not only with the mind, that is what brings change into your daily life, and that is what you can carry home after DTS.“

“SPHC was a transformational turning point in my faith walk where I learned to focus on others, serve, and honour others with my skills. Everything I learned in the course I put into practice to serve in the mission work that we were doing in Vanuatu. In changing me the Lord has changed my future and I walk with him and others in everything that I do.”
Paul Kerpel, 23, Alberta, Canada
“Doing The Cover to Cover DTS at Pacific Reach was one of the best things I’ve decided to do. Reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelation helped me see more of the different characteristics and nature of God. The Cover to Cover DTS was great. It taught me how to be diligent, manage my time properly, and helped me have a more sturdy foundation and in my beliefs. “
Talon Jernigan, 20, USA
“The Justice Movement Stream taught me to truly fall in love with and respect other cultures and people groups, and how to see them as God sees them.”
Kasandra Adler, 19, Missouri, USA
“Before joining the Medical Compassion stream, it was hard for me to understand what total surrender looked like in my life. I realize now that it is not my own compassion that compels me to love and care for others, but rather, it is the Father’s heart through me. I realize now that He is the true Savior, and I am simply a vessel chosen to carry His love and mercy to those hurting around me.”
Maeve Cooney, 18, Maryland, USA
“Our DTS was a time set apart to seek God’s face and encounter Him in a completely new way. During those five months, He realigned our heart and mind with His heart and His thoughts for us. We found that to love Him and to sit at the feet of Jesus is the only place we want to be and to live our lives from.”
