Living in Community at Pacific Reach
Living in Community
Ever wonder what it’s like living in community? What will housing look like during your DTS? Will everyone be altogether? Is everyone on base and in the same building? How many people in each room?
There are always so many questions about what the living quarters look like at Pacific Reach, but we’re here to answer those questions!
Here at Pacific Reach, we value hospitality, whether you’re coming for your DTS or maybe just a visit. Our hope is that you feel most at home!
More often than not the students stay in the main building; there are two main rooms. One has five bunks and the other has seven, with each having a divider wall making the room seem not so big. There is other housing on the base where the staff stays, so there is plenty of space.
When you arrive on base for your DTS, you will find out where you will be rooming and who you will be rooming with. There are typically 6 to 14 people in each room. It’s very special because you get so close to those who are in your room on DTS!
Prior to your arrival, every room in Pacific Reach will have been carefully prayed about and thought through. From room to bed, EVERY space is brought to God!

Living in community is SO much fun! There are always people around to hang out, pray, worship, or play games with.
With all these people around, we have created a culture of encouragement – where you can encourage and be encouraged every day!
And lastly, food is made for you, so you don’t have to worry about cooking (unless you want to jump in with the kitchen where you could bless the base with tasty meals).
Also, if you like alone time, there’s no need to be overwhelmed. We are super blessed with the property we have here, which means you have plenty of opportunities to be by yourself. You can wander down the hill to the valley to have your own time by the waterfall, or head over to the chapel or garden to spend time with the Lord.
Altogether, living in community is such a joy!

“Doing SPHC was an amazing experience. Not only was I given the opportunity to continue to grow spiritually, but I learned things that can be used in a very practical and much needed way. SPHC gave me the opportunity to show the Father’s heart to people in a very unique way and love on the person in front of me while helping them in such a simple way.”
Karunia Been, 20, Portugal
“For the first time in my life, God showed the revelation of his father-heart through the Cover-to-Cover Bible read and I can now say that I know that I am a Daughter of the King of Kings. So many things moved from my head to my heart through the teaching and reading, and I’m so thankful the Lord lead me into this stream!”
Elizabeth Thruston, 24, USA
“The Justice Movement stream really opened my eyes to what justice looks like through the eyes of God. Justice is more than making wrong right, it’s walking in mercy and humility. Justice is bringing light and life to orphans, widows, immigrants, and hope to anyone who is oppressed.”
Naomi Wilson, 18, AB, Canada
“Coming into the medical compassion stream, I thought it would just be an addition to my medical experience. But after laying down my expectations I was able to grasp the essence of compassion through ministry, experiencing a new perspective on medicine. Choosing to serve in love, and taking the time to seek out and care for the one who need it most.”
Yekaterina Lukyanchina, 20, Russia/America
“I decided to do a DBS because I wanted to know as much about the Bible as I could. And yes, I learned a lot about the Bible, the historical background and so on. But my biggest gain from the DBS was to learn and see the Bible come alive and active in my own life. The Bible used to be a boring book to me, with a bunch of unrelatable stories and letters. During DBS I got to know how to apply God’s Word to my life and how to be discipled, transformed and guided by it. My life changed so much through that and is still changing. I believe that’s what the Bible is for, to lead us closer to God and to help us to become more like Him.”
Silas Bauer, 22, Germany
“SPHC is such an incredible gateway to seeing the world with God’s eyes. To see how His heart breaks at the brokenness of this world, and to see how the lack of education about little things such as germs and washing hands causes so much illness and suffering in the world, to then be equipped and sent to BRING THAT CHANGE! It is such a life changing/ perspective shifting program that has really changed my life!”
Antonio Wolfe, 20, Alberta, Canada
“The Medical Compassion DTS gave me a glimpse into the medical side or missions. The compassion part was what caught me. I saw that when we see with Jesus’ eyes of genuine compassion, we must get our hands dirty.”
Brady Picking, 21, Pennsylvania, USA
“When I signed up for the worship DTS at YWAM Pacific Reach NZ I thought it was just about praising God. It’s about the role we play as worship leaders, it about how you lead the worship session, when to pray, and when and how you end. I recommend the Worship DTS to everyone who is inspired by the worship at your home church.”
Adam Pelletier, 36, BC. Canada
“The Pilgrimage DTS allowed me to take the time I needed to get to know God more and grow closer to Him while spending lots of time in His beautiful creation. God also used the hikes to challenge and encourage me to rely on Him more.”
Colin Berkley, 24. B.C. Canada
“The Medical Compassion DTS magnified my love for those in need. It stressed the importance of the power of prayer and how I can go to God in all the medical and daily situations in my life and the lives of those I minister to.”
Noah Armbruster, 20, Michigan, USA
